Seven habits that keep production databases safe

October 20, 2026

Most database accidents are not exotic. Someone runs a statement against the wrong server, forgets a WHERE, or leaves a transaction open over lunch. These habits prevent most of them.

1. Make production look different

If every connection looks the same, you will eventually run something in the wrong place. In DB Studio Pro, mark a connection Production and it shows a red banner and asks you to confirm before anything that changes data.

2. Use a read-only user for looking around

The strongest protection is a database account that cannot write. Create one for day-to-day work and keep the powerful account for deliberate changes. Read-only connections in the app are enforced by the database itself on PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQLite, and by statement checks elsewhere, but a restricted account protects you from every tool.

3. Preview before you apply

Read the SQL before it runs. When you edit cells in the results grid, the app stages the changes and shows you the exact statements first. Do the same for scripts: run the SELECT version of a delete before the delete.

4. Wrap risky changes in a transaction

Begin, run the change, look at the result, then commit or roll back. Give the tab its own session so the transaction is really yours, and the app warns you before you close with uncommitted work.

5. Count before you change

Run SELECT count(*) with the same WHERE first. If you expected 12 rows and it says 12,000, you just saved yourself an afternoon.

6. Do not paste secrets into SQL

Statements that contain passwords or keys end up in history files and logs. The app leaves statements that look like secrets out of its history, but the better habit is to keep them out of scripts altogether.

7. Keep a way back

Know where your last backup is before you start, and how long a restore takes. A change you can undo is a different kind of change.

None of these needs special tools. They need the habit, and a client that makes the safe path the easy one.
